About Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are extremely effective at preventing decay on the biting surface of “chewing” teeth. In a simple procedure, the tooth is first cleaned and conditioned with a mild acidic product. A tooth-colored resin is then essentially painted onto the surface of each tooth. It seals and protects all those deep pits and grooves occurring naturally in teeth, thus making them easier to properly clean. It acts as a protective barrier against cavity-causing acids and plaque.
It only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth. The sealant typically lasts several years before reapplication is needed. Ask your pediatric dentist if dental sealant is right for your child.
